Gippsland Lakes School Expedition
Journey across Gippsland lakes
“Gippy” Lakes or the “Lakes”, as they are affectionately known by locals, is Australia’s largest natural enclosed waterway being 103 km long. Gippsland Lakes comprises of three main lakes: Wellington, Victoria and King. The townships of Paynesville, Metung, Lakes Entrance and Loch Sport are dotted along this inland water system. Seven fresh water rivers (Latrobe, Thompson, Perry, Avon, Tambo, Mitchell, Nicholson) flow into the Lakes to sustain life and create amazing geological features such as the Mitchell River silt jetties. The Lakes are primarily known for their bird life with more than 190 species of birds including the white bellied sea eagle and little tern. Camp sites are plentiful along Gippsland Lakes, and access to Ninety Mile Beach Marine National Park is possible at the Bunga Arm and Reedy Bay camp sites. SKA has found Gippsland Lakes to be a safe and ideal journey based expedition area for school groups.
